Poem of the Month
May 2026
A Mother Denied
We are one of the other, I am their home
I have no legs, but provide them space to roam
I have no arms, but all of their weight I do hold
No words of my own, but many stories I’ve told
They like change, they don’t like things to stay the same
I oblige with new weather, they call it a new name
I can change four times, they call it seasons
I do it for a mother’s love and no other reason
They have preference on weather, to each their own
And I honor each difference, a trait a mother has shown
There are some that love my winter’s freeze
While others who prefer a warmer breeze
I hear them whisper silent woes
And listen while they speak of hurt from foe
I provide them with warmth of sun and canopy of tree
For them to process and weep privately
Does not a mother sit with hard feelings?
And provide comfort through uncomfortable things
I am capable of doing that and more
For it is empathy that I have to bore
I acknowledge and see that they feel pain
Like a mother I unconsciously mirror that pain
When they are hurting just a small amount, I bring rain
But when their pain and hurt is heavy, hurricane
They feel that from me they are independent
That their life is not one that I represent
They feel that they are their own entity
Do they not understand that they come from me?
I hope that one day they will wake up and see
I am their mother and they belong with me
For although without a government name
Are we really not one of the same?
